Forums, Messageboards, Groups
SOME WORDS OF CAUTION: There are scam artists and just plain wacky people out there in the cyberuniverse. Most writer forums are populated by people wanting to learn, to help, to interact with other writers. But, even these forums and groups attract some not-so-nice or not-so-honest types. You don't have to do anything offensive other than to be talented or simply display some confidence in order to attract the attention and the rage and subsequent bullying and stalking by the crazies. My advice is to ignore it all. I have noticed that not giving the crazies the attention they so desperately want from you does provoke them to greater rage but eventually, they run out of air. And if the alternative is to interact with them, well... that's no alternative. DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS. Also, be extremely cautious with self-important self-appointed "Gurus" and "experts" on writing who troll writer forums, often participating with sock puppet extra identities to praise themselves, and be especially suspicious if they appear to hold out the carrot stick of being able to get your writing sold. They are scamming. If they were real agents or story readers or anyone else in the business, they would not be trolling forums. And be aware that there is at least one major forum owner who works in concert with the scammers and will turn over your IP address and other personal data to the scammers and the bullies. Just be a wise cyber-surfer. I will never link to that one forum or ever mention it on my website here.
